Sulfonylurea (UK: Sulphonylurea) derivatives are antidiabetic drugs primarily used to treat diabetes mellitus type 2, and include drugs such as Chlorpropamide, Tolazamide, Tolbutamide, Glyburide, Gliclazide, Glipizide, Gliquidone, Acetohexamide and others. They act by increasing insulin release from the beta cells in the pancreas. Sulfonylureas are ineffective where there is absolute deficiency of insulin production such as in type 1 diabetes or post-pancreatectomy. Gliclazide (brand names Diamicron, Glizid, Glyloc, Reclide, Glubitor-OD, and Clizid) and Gliquidone (brand name Glurenorm) are oral antidiabetic drugs, from the family of sulfonylureas. They are indicated for treatment of diabetes mellitus type 2 and act to increase insulin release from pancreatic beta cells. The analytical determination of the drug is necessary for the diagnosis of "factitious hypoglycemia". The way to differentiate the possible causes of hypoglycemia (insulinoma, hypoglycemic surreptitious intake) during one of the episodes of hypoglycemia (spontaneous or produced during the fasting test) includes the determination of glucose, insulin, C-peptide, proinsulin, insulin antibodies and sulfonylureas in blood.
