Tacrine is a cholinesterase inhibitor that crosses the blood-brain barrier. Tacrine inhibits acetylcholinesterase from breaking down the neurotransmitter acytelcholine. Tacrine has been used to stimulate respiratory secretions, to counter the effects of muscle relaxants, and to treat Alzheimer's disease and other central nervous system disorders.
