Version 2.77

Description

Influenza B viruses can be separated into two major lineages, B/Victoria and B/Yamagata. Recent studies have shown that the two major lineages may differ in terms of epidemiology and risk of secondary infection. One study found that patients with confirmed influenza B Victoria lineage infections were significantly younger compared to patients infected with the Yamagata lineage. PMID: 25034374 A separate study found that Victoria-lineage viruses were associated with a significantly higher risk of secondary infection among patients' household contacts who were 15 years old or younger than among those older than 15, but the same did not hold true for Yamagata-lineage viruses. PMID: 26400854 Studies have also shown that genetically distinct lineages like B/Victoria/2/87 can cocirculate in the population and that the reassortment among these strains plays a role in generating the genetic diversity of influenza B viruses.
