A parasitic hemoflagellate of the subgenus Leishmania leishmania that infects man and rodents. This taxonomic complex includes species which cause a disease called Oriental sore which is a form of cutaneous leishmaniasis (LEISHMANIASIS, CUTANEOUS) of the Old World. The diagnosis of dermal or cutaneous leishmaniasis is more difficult than the visceral form, since a detectable immune response is often absent. Also, since cross-reactions may occur, e.g., Chagas' disease, malaria, schistosomiasis, positive results provide only suggestive support for the diagnosis. Source: Regenstrief Institute
Leishmania tropica is a species of flagellate parasites that infects humans and hyraxes. It can cause a disease called oriental sore which is a form of cutaneous leishmaniasis.Leishmania tropica is a single-celled trypanosome parasite responsible for causing cutaneous Leishmaniasis.
Cutaneous Leishmaniasis develops at the site of a sand fly bite. The sand fly, which carries the promastigote stage of L. tropica, is the vector.
