Description
Albumin is the protein of greatest concentration found in plasma consisting of approximately 55-60% of the serum protein. Synthesis is hepatic. Albumin has several functions; it provides the majority of the intravascular oncotic pressure and helps with the regulation of fluid concentrations in tissues. It has a major role in binding and transport of endogenous substances and medications. Albumin has antioxidant activity and may assist in wound healing, has a heparin-like anticoagulant effect, and acts as a buffer for acid-base homoestasis. Ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), where the metal binding capacity of albumin has deceased because of exposure to ischemic events, is a bio-marker of myocardial ischemia. Changes in IMA levels have shown to appear during coronary angioplasty-induced ischemia. IMA is an early test that can be combined with electrocardiographic (ECG) findings and cardiac troponin testing for the early exclusion of acute coronary syndrome.
