N-acetyl-L-aspartate (NAA) normally occurs in high concentrations in the brain tissue, and its function is not well-understood. An elevation of NAA in urine and plasma is a marker of Canavan disease, a rare genetic disorder characterized by hypotonia, severe cognitive delay, blindness, demyelination and leukodystrophy, and typically death by 18 months of life. Canavan disease is caused by a mutation in the ASPA gene, which encodes aspartoacylase, the enzyme that metabolizes NAA. [OMIM: 271900] Source: Regenstrief LOINC, OMIM: 271900
