Vascular endothelial growth factor A
Active
Description
Vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) is a member of a sub-family of growth factors, specifically the platelet-derived growth factor family of cystine-knot growth factors. Other members are Placenta growth factor (PGF), VEGF-B, VEGF-C and VEGF-D. They were discovered later than VEGF-A. Before their discovery, VEGF-A was called just VEGF. Elevated levels of VEGF-A is linked to POEMS syndrome, also known as Crow-Fukase syndrome. Mutations in the VEGFA gene that encodes VEGF-A have been associated with proliferative and nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy.
