Version 2.77

Description

Methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) is a type of Staph aureus that does not contain the mecA gene and therefore, is still susceptible to methicillin and other beta-lactam antibiotics. Transfer of mecA to MSSA turns MSSA into methicillin-resistant Staph aureus (MRSA), which is an increasingly common cause of both hospital- and community-acquired skin and wound infections.
