Version 2.77

Description

Aromatic (hydrocarbon) solvents comprised wholly or primarily of aromatic hydrocarbon compounds. They are used commercially in numerous applications, including industrial solvents and chemical intermediates. Aromatic solvents can also be found in glues, paints, and paint thinners. Testing is performed to monitor occupational exposure to these solvents, including benzene, ethylbenzene, pentane, styrene, toluene, and xylenes. Toxicity from aromatic solvents causes CNS depressant effects (eg, irritation, nausea, dizziness, unconsciousness, etc). Severity depends on the intensity and duration of the exposure. In addition, benzene is listed as a potential carcinogen. Source: Regenstrief LOINC
