Transferrin is a serum protein that delivers iron to cells. It is typically linked to varying numbers of sialic acid, a monosaccharide carbohydrate. The most common form is tetrasialotransferrin, with four sialic acid residues. Patients with congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG) typically have a relative increase in disialotransferrin and a relative decrease in longer sialotransferrins.
