RR interval.standard deviation
Active
Description
The RR interval standard deviation and coefficient of variability both reflect the variation in the time interval between heart beats over a period of time. Some degree of variability is normal and is due to physiologic processes such as respiration and blood pressure regulation. Decreased variability of the RR interval is associated with exercise and stress, as well as congestive heart failure (CHF) and diabetes. Decreased variability may also be an indicator of increased susceptibility to ventricular arrhythmias and also an independent risk factor for mortality after myocardial infarction and in patients with advanced CHF. Medications can also affect heart rate variability, which effect is an important consideration when making decisions about which medications to use, especially in high-risk patients.
