Version 2.77

Description

Dichlorvos is colorless to amber liquid with a mild chemical odor that is used as an insecticide in households, for public health, and in stored products. It is an organophosphate and cholinesterase inhibitor that is used to treat mushroom flies, aphids, spider mites, caterpillars, thrips, and white flies in greenhouses, outdoor fruit, and vegetable crops. It is also used in dogs, livestock, and humans as a remedy against parasitic worm infections. Dichlorvos is highly toxic if inhaled, absorbed through the skin or ingested. The most common route of exposure is through inhalation. Symptoms of poisoning by inhalation include bloody or runny nose, coughing, chest discomfort, difficult or short breath, and wheezing due to constriction or excess fluid in the bronchial tubes. Domestic animals that have been treated with dichlorvos with a slow-release formula for internal parasites have exhibited symptoms of cholinesterase inhibition such as nausea or diarrhea. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has classified dichlorvos to be a mutagen and possible human carcinogen. Dichlorvos is highly toxic to birds and bees but does not significantly bioaccumulate in fish. Ultraviolet light increases the toxicity of dichlorvos in aquatic wildlife by 5-150 times.[http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/extoxnet/carbaryl-dicrotophos/dichlorvos-ext.html] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
