Description

Carbonic anhydrase 6 (CA6) antibodies are early markers for identifying patients with Sjogren's disease or Sjogren's syndrome and may identify those who have significant symptoms but are anti-Ro and anti-La antibody negative. Sjogren's disease is an autoimmune disease associated with kidney and lung disease as well as disorders of the salivary and lacrimal glands, which lead to problems with dry eyes and mouth. Sjogren's syndrome is associated with isolated salivary and lacrimal gland dysfunction and may be associated with other autoimmune disorders, such as systemic lupus erythematosus. Both the disease and syndrome are typically diagnosed later in the disease course due to non-specific or mild symptoms early in the course. CA6 is an enzyme that is found in the submandibular and parotid glands and is involved in the buffering capacity of saliva. CA6 antibodies occur early in the course of Sjogren's disease and are almost always found in patients who also have salivary gland protein 1 antibodies. CA6 antibodies rarely occur in patients without autoimmune disease or those with autoimmune disease who do not have problems with dry eyes and mouth.
