Description

The M. abscessus complex consists of three subspecies (M. abscessus subsp. Abscessus, M. abscessus subsp. Massiliense, M. abscessus subsp. Bolletii). PMID: 22403419 They are known to cause respiratory disease in cystic fibrosis and elderly patients as well as skin and soft tissue infections. PMID: 25106861 M. abscessus infections are often difficult to treat as many strains are resistant to most of the common antibiotics. Their resistance to clarithromycin can be determined based on expression of the inducible ribomethylase gene, erm(41). The presence of a full length functional erm(41)gene, which is specific for M. abscessus, confers inducible resistance to clarithromycin while the non-functional truncated erm(41) gene exhibits higher drug susceptibility.
