Version 2.80

Description

Transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) is a coronovirus which causes an acute viral disease of swine. It is a common diarrheal virus in pigs of all ages. Jejunal and ileal villous epithelial cells are infected and destroyed by the virus. It is extremely fatal to pigs under 3 weeks old, with mortality rates decreasing with age. It is characterized by diarrhea and vomiting. TGEV can also exist in an endemic form in swine herds where either partial immunity or a concurrent porcine respiratory coronavirus (PRCV) infection is present. Since PRCV shares antibody neutralizing epitopes with TGEV, it acts like a vaccine against TGEV, making the disease less severe and causing lower mortality.
