Neurofilaments (Nfs) are the dominant proteins of the axonal cytoskeleton and are composed of 3 subunits, a light (NfL, 68-70 kDa), a medium (NfM, 145-160 kDa) and a heavy (NfH, 200-220 kDa) chain. PMID: 8833441 They are CNS cell-type specific proteins and potential markers for axonal injury, disintegration and loss in conditions such as multiple sclerosis.
