Description

N-acetylaspartylglutamate (NAAG) is the 3rd most prevalent neurotransmitter in mammals that has multiple mechanisms of action, including acting as an N-methyl-D-aspartate-sensitive glutamate receptor antagonist and a presynaptic inhibitor of another type of glutamate receptor in the metabotropic receptor category. While the exact role of NAAG in clinical disease is not known, it is thought to be involved in multiple disease processes, including schizophrenia PMID: 22304714 and Canavan disease PMID: 10333125. Under the INN spaglumic acid, NAAG is used as an antiallergic medication in eye drops and nasal preparations.[Wiki: N-Acetylaspartylglutamic_acid] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
