Description
Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), also known as coronary angioplasty, is a procedure that restores blood flow to the heart. During the procedure, a thin, flexible guiding catheter is threaded through a blood vessel over a guide wire to the affected artery. A guiding catheter can hold other devices, such as a balloon or stent. Once the guiding catheter is in place, a balloon can be inflated to compress the plaque against the artery wal, or a stent, which is a small mesh tube that is used to open and provide support to narrow or weak arteries, can be placed.
