Escherichia coli enteroaggregative pAA plasmid aggR+aatA genes
Active
Description
Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC) is a bacteria that causes chronic diarrhea in travelers, children in developing countries, HIV-infected patients, and in farm animals, most commonly piglets and calves. A low-molecular weight, heat-stable, plasmid-encoded enterotoxin known as EAEC heat-stable enterotoxin 1 (EAST1) is produced by some strains of EAEC. EAST1 is encoded by the astA gene. In addition to EAEC, the astA gene has been identified in other diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (EC) pathotypes including enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC), enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), diffusely adherent E. coli (DAEC) and enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC).
