Description

N-methyl-D-Aspartate receptor (NMDAR) is a type of glutamate receptor found in nerve cells. It plays a key role in controlling synaptic plasticity and memory function. PMID: 19605837 Anti-NMDAR IgG antibodies are found in a subset of patients with autoimmune limbic encephalitis, which progresses from symptoms such as psychosis, memory deficits, seizures, and language disintegration into a state of unresponsiveness with catatonic features and breathing instability. The disorder predominantly affects children and young adults and may occur with or without tumor association. Decreasing antibody levels may be associated with therapeutic response.
