Descriptions

Nystagmus is a rapid oscillation of the eyes which can be due to neurologic or optic causes. Nystagmus motion can be planar (horizontal, vertical, or in-between) or torsional. The null point is the head posture adopted by an individual to stop or minimize nystagmus. Null point is also used to describe abnormal head positions that provide the best vision with other eye conditions. Source: Regenstrief LOINC

An abnormal or compensatory head posture occurs when the head is deviated out of the normal primary straight head position in order to minimize symptoms due to an ocular or non-ocular problem. Abnormal head positions can include chin up or down, head tilt to the right or left, face turns to the right or left, or a combination of any of these. Ocular causes of abnormal head posture include: 1) eye misalignment or strabismus, in which the patient finds the head position that will best align vision and/or relieve eye strain; 2) nystagmus, in which different head positions may slow down nystagmus and allow better vision; 3) ptosis, in which the chin is typically elevated to help the eye or eyes see "beneath" the droopy eyelid, and 4) refractive errors, in which turning the head to one side may allow the patient to see better since they are looking through the narrowed opening of the eyelids, which simulates a "squinting" mechanism.
