Ribose 5-phosphate isomerase (RPI) [UniProt: P49247] is part of the pentose phosphate pathway and synthesizes D-ribose 5-phosphate from D-ribulose 5-phosphate. Ribose 5-phosphate isomerase deficiency (RPID) is caused by mutations in the RPIA gene.[OMIM: 608611] Deficient activity of Rpi has been demonstrated in fibroblasts and lymphoblasts.
