Description
Floxacillin or flucloxacillin (tradename Flopen or Floxapen) is an isoxazolyl penicillin often used to treat many infections caused by Gram-positive species, such as streptococci and penicillinase-producing staphylococci, including methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA). Studies have shown that flucloxacillin is 95%-97% bound to plasma albumin. The extent of binding to plasma proteins is important, as it is the unbound (free) fraction of drug that produces the pharmacological effect. For critically ill patients, hypoalbuminaemia may be observed, and the effects of hypoalbuminaemia on the pharmacokinetics of highly bound antiboitics may pose a potential risk for inappropriate antibiotic therapy in these patients.
