Description

Voriconazole N-oxide is a metabolite of voriconazole. The parent drug, voriconazole is a triazole antifungal medication that is generally used to treat serious fungal infections such as invasive candidiasis and aspergillosis, in patients who are immunocompromised. Although vorizonazole N-oxide has minimal antifungal activity compared to its parent drug, it has been found to inhibit the metabolic activity of CYP3A4 and CYP2C19 in vitro, and because voriconazole is mainly metabolized via CYP2C19 and/or CYP3A4, its metabolite may actually affect its metabolism. Checking levels of both voriconazole and its N-oxide metabolite can be useful for therapeutic drug monitoring and evaluation for toxicity. PMID: 26424015 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
