Version 2.78

Description

Bedaquiline (trade name Sirturo) is a diarylquinoline anti-tuberculosis drug. When it was approved by the U.S. FDA in 2012, it was the first time in 40 years that a drug with a different mechanism of action compared to the existing TB treatments had been approved, and it is specifically approved to treat adults with pulmonary multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB) and extensively drug resistant tuberculosis (XDR TB). Badaquiline should only be used when an effective treatment regimen cannot otherwise be provided. The most common side effects of bedaquiline in studies were nausea, joint and chest pain, and headache, however the drug also has a black-box warning for life-threatening arrhythmias, as it may induce long QT syndrome by blocking the hERG channel.
