Surfactant replacement
Active
Description
Surfactant is a naturally occurring substance made of six lipids and four proteins that is produced in the lungs. Surfactant reduces the surface tension of fluid in the lungs and helps make the small air sacs in the lungs (alveoli) more stable and keeps them from collapsing. In preparation for breathing air, fetuses begin making surfactant between 24 and 28 weeks gestation. Babies born very prematurely often lack adequate surfactant, and need to be given surfactant replacement therapy immediately after birth in order to breathe.
