Description

For various reasons, the patient origin for a particular specimen may be questioned. When the patient identity for a specimen (especially paraffin-embedded material) needs to be verified, a panel of 12 microsatellite markers that recognize highly variable regions of human DNA PCR-based assay can be used for identification. The assay compares the genotype for the specimen in question, with the genotype of the patient specimens of known identity. Matching genotypes on multiple specimens suggest that they are derived from the same patient, whereas differences in genotype suggest different patient sources. A previous bone marrow transplant from an allogenic donor will interfere with testing. Source: Regenstrief LOINC
