Description

Serum cryoglobulins are typically immunoglobulins that, in vitro, precipitate at temperatures below 37°C and redissolve on rewarming.Cryoglobulins can be transient and without clinical implications or they can be a marker of significant disease. Monoclonal cryoglobulins, which include IgG, IgM, or IgA, or monoclonal free light chains, are usually associated with haematological disorders. Mixed cryoglobulins, which contain polyclonal immunoglobulins with or without a monoclonal component, are found in many infectious and systemic disorders. There is a significant association between essential mixed cryoglobulinaemia and hepatitis C virus infection (> 90%). PMID: 11825916 Cryoglobulins may also contain complement components, such as C3, C4 and C1q. Some cryoglobulinemias are associated with changes in serum complement levels, especially decreased complement C4, regardless of whether complements are part of the cryoglobulins themselves.
