Constitutive heterochromatin analysis
Active
Description
Constitutive heterochromatin represents compact DNA that contains no genes and includes centromeric and telomeric DNA as well as certain other regions on some chromosomes. For example, most of the human Y chromosome is made of constitutive heterochromatin. C-banding, a cytogenetic technique, intensely stains constitutive heterochromatin. Mutations involving constitutive heterochromatin affect cell differentiation, and some cancers have been associated with abnormalities in constitutive heterochromatin as well as the proteins involved in its formation and maintenance.
