Description
Strain is the magnitude of myocardial deformation, which is an energy-requiring process that occurs in both systole and diastole. It is also considered a normalized, dimensionless measure of deformation of a segment of myocardium in response to an applied force or stress. Abnormalities of myocardial deformation can be seen early in the development of mycardial pathophysiologic states, including ischemia. Strain is a sensitive means for detecting regional myocardial dysfunction. Strain calculations may be either Lagrangian (a deformation from its original length) or natural (a deformation relative to the length at a previous time). The natural strain calculation is more appropriate than Lagrangian when large deformations are observed. The direction of the greatest strain is considered the principal strain. Strain values can either be positive, indicating lengthening, or negative, indicating shortening. Values for normal circumferential and longitudinal strain are negative, and those for radial strain are positive. PMID: 21406664 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
