Description
Free protoporphyrin is non-complexed, non-heme protoporphyrin. The test is used along with blood lead levels to monitor chronic industrial exposure to lead. Patients with lead toxicity will also have elevated plasma and urine delta aminolevulinic acid and increased urine coproporphyrin. Urine porphobilinogen and uroporphyrin may be normal or be slightly increased. Skin contamination may lead to false increases. Source: Regenstrief Institute
