Description

Rituximab (trade names Rituxan, MabThera and Zytux) is a chimeric monoclonal antibody against the protein CD20, which is primarily found on the surface of immune system B cells. Rituximab destroys B cells and is thus used to treat diseases that are characterized by excessive numbers of B cells, overactive B cells, or dysfunctional B cells. This includes many lymphomas, leukemia, transplant rejection and autoimmune disorders. Rituximab is also used with methotrexate to treat moderate-to-severe forms of rheumatoid arthritis to decrease joint pain and swelling. It is usually used for arthritis only after other medications have not worked. It is also used to treat certain types of blood vessel disease (such as Wegener's granulomatosis, microscopic polyangiitis). Source: Regenstrief LOINC
