Version 2.78

Description

Apis mellifera (Honey Bee) was native to Africa, Europe and the Middle East but is now found worldwide. Sensitivity to honey bee venom is estimated to be 15-25% of the population and higher for people living in rural areas.(http://www.phadia.com/en/products/allergy-testing-products/immunocap-allergen-information/venoms/allergens/honey-bee/) Since exposure to honey bee venom can be life threatening to sensitized individuals determining the various allergens in honey bee venom can add immunotherapeutic treatment options. Fifty percent of individuals allergic to honey bee venom have been found to react to Api m 10 (also known as Icarapin variant 2, carbohydrate-rich protein). Testing for Api m 10 could be important in accurately diagnosing and treating a significant portion of the population allergic to honey bee venom.[PMID: 21658068] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
