Description
MDA5, more formally known as interferon-induced helicase C domain-containing protein 1, is an immune receptor for viral nucleic acids and plays a major role in activating antiviral responses, including the induction of type I interferons and proinflammatory cytokines. Anti-MDA5 autoantibodies, also known as anti-CADM-140, are associated with autoimmune disorders including dermatomyositis and interstitial lung disease. [UniProt: Q9BYX4] Anti-MDA5 autoantibodies are also found in a subset of patients with juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) who have polyarthritis and ulcerative skin disease but milder muscle disease. Anti-MDA5 assays may be useful during the work-up of patients with inflammatory disorders and may help guide treatment. PMID: 24989778 Source: Regenstrief LOINC, PMID: 24989778
