Version 2.77

Description

There are six major hepatitis C virus genotypes (1-6), each of which can be further subdivided into subtypes (for example, 1a, 1b, 2a). Genotypes 1, 2 and 3 are widely distributed in developed countries while other genotypes appear to be more geographically localized PMID: 10755999 Genotype 1 (including subtypes 1a and 1b) is the most prevalent by far in the United States. Genotype 3, constitutes 10% of HCV infections in the United States and Canada. Patients with this HCV genotype have a higher incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma, higher prevalence of steatosis and insulin resistance, and faster rates of fibrosis progression compared to patients with other HCV genotypes.
