Description
Phase analysis of the timing of myocardial contraction is used in nuclear cardiology to quantify regional ventricular wall motion and evaluate certain conditions, including bundle branch block, ventricular pacing, and pre-excitation syndromes. Phase and amplitude together are used to classify wall motion, which is also a measure of cardiac dyssynchrony.
The phase value is defined as the amount of shift in the sine or cosine curve (measured in degrees) using the fundamental frequency of the Fourier fitting, and all of the individual phase values are used together to create a phase histogram in order to see the distribution pattern of phase values. Separate histograms are created for the rest and stress portions of the study.
Multiple parameters are calculated from the histogram:
1. Phase maximum (degrees);
2. Phase mean (degrees);
3. Phase standard deviation (degrees);
4. Phase bandwidth, which is defined as 95% of the histogram width (degrees); and
5. Phase entropy, which is an index of disorder reported on a scale of 0-1 (0-100%), with 0 meaning complete order and 1 meaning complete disorder.
