Description

Intravenous lipid emulsions (ILE) are given to patients as a supplemental source of calories and essential fatty acids. Such emulsions can contain soybean, egg yolk, phospholipids, glycerin and water.[Intraveous Lipid Emulsions/volume editors, Philip C. Calder, Dan L. Waitzberg, Berthold Koletzko] In extremely low birth weight infants ILE is given to promote continued growth of the body and brain. In some reports the administration of ILE has been associated with lung disease, displacement of bilirubin from albumin, exacerbation of sepsis, CNS injury and thrombocytopenia, so some recommend measuring ILE by serum nephelometry in addition to serum cholesterol, triglycerides and free fatty acids.
