Description

Anti-Mi-2 antibodies are an effective biomarker for idiopathic inflammatory myopathies. Mi-2 antibodies have been identified in patients diagnosed with dermatomyositis, polymyositis and inclusion body myositis. PMID: 16410528 Cutaneous attributes associated with Mi-2 antibody levels include Gottron's papules, heliotrope rash, V-sign and shawl sign rashes and cuticular overgrowth. Patients with Mi-2 antibodies usually have milder muscle issues, a decreased risk of interstitial lung disease (ILD) and decreased risk of malignancy. They also respond better to immunotherapy and can expect a better prognosis. PMID: 26602539 The subfamily of Mi-2 includes Mi-2 alpha and Mi-2 beta. (http://www.snf2.net/snf2/subfamilies/mi2.shtml) Patients with antibodies to different fragments of the Mi-2 beta antigen experience little difference in symptoms and outcome than those with Mi-2 alpha antibodies except for a possible increased risk of cancer.
