Version 2.80

Description

Erythrocyte deformability refers to the changes in erythrocyte shape based on changes in the red blood cell water content and membrane surface area both of which are associated with impaired red blood cell survival. The laser-diffraction viscometer that measures these cellular parameters is an ektacytometer that is able to detect the changes in water content and membrane surface area with a high degree of sensitivity. The shape of the profiles and the position of characteristics along the osmolality axis are created by the ektacytometer and correspond to a number of hematologic disorders. Hemolytic disorders associated with change in red cell volume or surface area include hereditary stomatocytosis (increased volume) hereditary xerocytosis (decreased volume) and immune hemolytic anemia (decreased membrane surface area). Hereditary spherocytosis and hereditary pyropoikilocystosis involve changes in both cell volume and membrane surface area. PMID: 6831052 Source: Regenstrief LOINC ,
