Description

Mycobacterium avium Complex (MAC) is the most common non-tuberculous bacteria infecting humans and includes Mycobacterium avium and Mycobacterium intracellulare. It is pervasive in the environment including in fresh and saltwater, soil, dust, and in numerous animals including chickens, pigs, dogs, cats and insects. MAC is transmitted through the air and inhaled into the lungs leading to two models of disease. The first model is that of a healthy non-smoking patient that mostly affects women over 50 who present with interstitial patterns on chest radiography. In the second model of MAC the patient has underlying lung disease such as chronic obstructive lung disease, old tuberculosis, bronchiectasis or cystic fibrosis. These patients are mostly middle-aged or older white men with worsening cough, hemoptysis, night sweats, anorexia and weight loss. On the radiograph are cavitations with progressive fibronodular opacities (<5mm nodules) which mainly occurs in the upper lung.[http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/516240_3] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
