Description

Mitosis is the process by which a eukaryotic cell nucleus divides in two, and is followed by division of the parent cell into two daughter cells. Mitotic rate is the measurement of how fast these cells divide. Mitotic rate is calculated by the measurement of mitotic figures (condensed DNA that can be seen just before the cell divides) found on hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained tissue sections. PMID: 25364173 For multiple cancers, mitotic rate has been recognized as a key measurement in predicting how aggressive the cancer is. An increase in mitotic rate is associated with increased risk of mortality. Mitotic rate is not just used in the prognosis, but also for treatment planning. PMID: 21111956 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
