Version 2.78

Description

Geobacillus stearothermophilus is a rod-shaped, gram-positive bacteria commonly used as a biological indicator for sterilization in labs. PMID: 17012597 Because G. stearothermophilus are thermophillic, they are highly resistant to heat and therefore used in equipment validation studies to prove that sterilization took place. G. stearothermophilus was first described as Bacillus stearothermophilus, but was reclassified as a member of the genus Geobacillus in 2001 based on comparative analysis of the 16S rDNA sequences and fatty acid compositions of isolates.
