Lawsonia intracellularis VNTR pattern
Active
Description
Lawsonia intracellularis is an intracellular gram negative bacteria that causes proliferative enteropathy in pigs. Lawsonia isolate typing is important for epidemiologic purposes, both within a single farm, regionally, and globally. Variable number of tandem repeat (VNTR) analysis is used to determine the VNTR pattern for a specific isolate of L. intracellularis based on four specific sequences of DNA. The number of repeats at each of the four loci is calculated and then considered together as a single profile or pattern, e.g., 13-11-13-10 or 14-8-15-6. Each of these VNTR patterns identifies a unique strain of L. intracellularis, which information is used for epidemiologic analysis such as determining the source of an outbreak, tracking the spread of disease, and monitoring eradication. https://www.aasv.org/shap/issues/v19n5/v19n5p277.pdf Source: Regenstrief LOINC
