Description

Transferrin is a protein that binds to iron and carries it to the liver, spleen and bone marrow. Testing for transferrin in stool can determine if bleeding is occurring anywhere in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Bleeding may be due to early stage carcinoma and adenomatous polyps and can be detected in the stool by measuring intact heme, intact hemoglobin, heme-derived porphyrins and transferrin. Tests that measure intact hemoglobin are sensitive only to lesions in the lower intestine since hemoglobin is easily broken down and any hemoglobin originating in the upper gastrointestinal tract is unlikely to be intact by the time it reaches the lower intestine. Transferrin is more stable than hemoglobin and remains intact even when it originates in the upper intestinal tract.[ http://www.healgen.com/tumor-marker/transferrin Source: Regenstrief LOINC
