Description
Plasma cells are fully differentiated B lymphocytes that produce and secrete a specific antibody.[https://www.cancer.gov/types/myeloma/patient/myeloma-treatment-pdq] Plasma cells typically produce a mixture of kappa and lambda light chains, but monotypic (or monoclonal) plasma cells produce either elevated kappa or lambda light chains.[http://hematologyoutlines.com/atlas_topics/76.html] Monotypic plasma cells are characteristic of disorders such as leukemia and multiple myeloma. The use of multi-parameter flow cytometry makes it possible to analyze large numbers of cells that distinguish intracellular antigens. Not only does such technology improve the diagnosis of monotypic populations, but it also is important for monitoring treatment and demonstrating smoldering disease.
