Bacterial carbapenem resistance blaOXA-51-like gene
Active
Description
The carbapenemase blaOXA-51-like genes are members of the beta lactam resistance gene group OXA, which causes resistance to carbapenem antibiotics. The blaOXA-51-like genes are primarily found in Acinetobacter baumannii, which is a common cause of multidrug-resistant nosocomial infections. The blaOXA-51- and blaOXA-23-like genes are the two most common resistance genes in A. baumannii and cause resistance to drugs such as ceftazidime, piperacillin, cefepime, nitrofurantoin and ertapenem. PMID: 26550338 The "OXA-like" groups of genes are molecularly similar to and thought to evolve from the original gene for which the group is named. For example, as of 2014 the blaOXA-23-like group included 19 genes, including including blaOXA-23, -27, -49, and -73. PMID: 24696435 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
