Description

Haemophilus parasuis is a gram-negative organism that is harbored in the upper respiratory tract of healthy pigs. It causes Glasser's disease, which is characterized by polyarthritis, polyserositis and meningitis and associated with high morbidity and mortality. Virulence factors include resistance to phagocytosis as well as endothelial invasion, polysaccharide capsule, and biofilm production. Biofilms are enclosed clusters of bacterial cells that are able to resist the host immune system as well as environmental factors such as dessication. PMID: 25428823 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
