Description

Cytolethal distending toxin B (CdtB) is a protein that is produced by gram negative bacteria. CdtB targets eukaryotic DNA. PMID: 16427513 Antibodies against this toxin can cross react with vinculin, a cytoskeletal protein found in epithelial cells. In animal models, these vinculin antibodies have been shown to cause symtoms similar to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). CdtB antibodies are useful as biomarkers for irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (D-IBS) in humans, and may help distinguish D-IBS from inflammatory bowel disease in the workup of chronic diarrhea.
