Description

Veterinary Medicine:
Porcine cytomegalovirus (PCMV) is a subgroup of the herpesviruses that causes inclusion body rhinitis (IBR). IBR causes a constellation of symptom mainly in nursing or newly weaned piglets that include rhinitis, conjunctivitis, sneezing, nasal discharge, respiratory distress, shivering, and mouth breathing. Pregnant sows that become infected with PCMV are at risk of delivering a dead, mummified, stillborn, or weak piglet. PCMV can be found all over the world in pigs of all ages. The virus is transmitted when virus in nasal and ocular secretions, urine, and infected aerosols created by sneezing and coughing are inhaled or ingested. Infection is usually asymptomatic when a herd immunity against PCMV is present or when the pigs are six weeks or older in age. PCMV invades several types of epithelial cells and forms intranuclear inclusion bodies that are visible microscopically when stained. Diagnosis of PCMV infection is most often made by viewing the intranuclear bodies in tissue samples of symptomatic pigs. The diagnosis can be confirmed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or indirect immunofluorescent assay (IF). No known effective treatment or medication is available.[https://vetmed.iastate.edu/vdpam/FSVD/swine/index-diseases/porcine-cytomegalovirus]The ability of PCMV to infect humans has not been established.[http://www.swinehealth.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Porcine-cytomegalovirus-PCMV.pdf] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
