Alpha benzene hexachloride
Active
Description
Alpha benzene hexachloride is one of the isomers of hexachlorocyclohexane present in the pesticide Lindane. Lindane is a mixture of the alpha-, beta-, gamma-, -delta, and epsilon-hexachlorocyclohexane produced when benzene is photochlorinated. The gamma isomer is the only one that is an active insecticide. Lindane is used as a pest control on fruits and vegetables, to treat seeds, in forestry, and to treat insects on livestock and pets. It is also used in the treatment of head and pubic lice and their eggs. Lindane is highly toxic if ingested, inhaled or if it comes in contact with the skin. It is a suspected carcinogen and teratogen and is very destructive to internal organs. Lindane is extremely toxic to aquatic wildlife.
